Through faith in Christ His blood washes over us and makes us clean. The water of baptism represents the blood of Christ, and gives us a sign of the inward reality of God’s grace and forgiveness. It is an outward expression of God’s inward work to justify us through His grace given to us through his death upon the cross. Second, baptism signifies being joined to Christ or our union with Him. Baptism helps us to live out the inward spiritual reality of being buried with Christ. It is there in His grave where our sin remains. It there in His grave that our old life remains. When we rise out of the waters of baptism we rise filled with God’s eternal life. Baptism symbolizes death to the person I once was, self-centered and living for myself, and new life, now living for Christ. Third, the waters of Baptism signify the gift of The Holy Spirit into our lives. It is God’s breath in us that gives us life. It is the Holy Spirit that saves us. Baptism is in a sense a culmination of the work of the Holy Spirit bringing us to salvation but it also marks the beginning: The beginning of life in Christ. So it is that God empowers believers with his Spirit to guides us, strengthen us, comfort us, and to be His seal upon us to bring us safely home. We are marked and sealed as Christ’s own through the Holy Spirit in our lives. We would missing the point if we thought that. We may say “God I will be good for the rest of my life if you will let me in” or “God you know I have been a decent person, perhaps even a good person and I deserve to be in”- Neither way will work! We must come before God like a baby - with nothing to give - with nothing to offer - and at the same time very content to be reliant upon Him. Its both don’t you see. When we realize we are helpless, it’s in our helplessness that we receive grace and God’s help. We are simply delighted that He picks us up and spiritually holds us in his arms of salvation. It is entitled- The Transfiguration and was his last painting before his death at age 37. In fact this painting was not completed at his death in 1520 but was finished by one of his students.  One thing that strikes me in this masterpiece is how Raphael ties the two episodes together. On top is the glory of Christ revealed- notice how light and the glory of Jesus dominate the top portion. The disciples are covering their eyes because it’s so bright. On the bottom scene all eyes are on the boy possessed by a spirit. It is a scene of turmoil, trouble and darkness. Raphael tied these two themes together as one and so does Mark in his gospel. If we are to glean the message of today’s gospel we must remember the context of the transfiguration. The two scenes in Raphael’s painting stand is stark contrast yet are part of the same painting. This is a picture of life of the Christian. For as Peter, James and John had been given the gift of the glimpse of the glory of God they were also called to ministry in a fallen world. Jesus took them off the mountain into turmoil and chaos. The historic formulation of the trinity is that God is one in essence and three in person: Now that was easy to say but hard to explain. Not only is the trinity a description it is the revelation of a person who we can know and love (well three persons who are one in substance). This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones:  I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. It was the Ruach   (Hebrew for “The Spirit” or “The Breath” of God) that brought dry bones to life. It is the breath of God that gives us life. Remember it was the very breath of God that brought Adam to life.  At Pentecost God was not pouring out physical life but spiritual life. For it is by the very breath of God that we are born again.
